Final Fall 2011

After being exposed to more of the broadcast world, I find myself leaning towards the more technical side of it. I really love reporting though and editing a package by myself but not so much as being the main face on a channel. I say that but my idol in the broadcast industry is Robin Meade.

Robin Meade started her career as a reporter in a tiny town called Mansfield, Ohio. She was inducted in the Ohio Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2005. Meade also won a regional Emmy Award for her work covering a collision between a school bus and a train. She has worked her way up from small town news stations to being Headline News anchor for CNN.

I want to be able to do the same thing, work my way to the top. Starting out as a reporter and working up, a career can start as low as $26, 166 to about $114, 573 according to the National Salary Database. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, News reporting is supposed to be declining by six percent between 2008-2018.

The Bureau also says that employers prefer individuals with a bachelor’s degree in journalism or mass communication and experience gained at school, newspapers, broadcasting stations, or through internships. The best thing for me to do is sharpen my skills here at Florida Southern College and learn everything I’ll need to land an internship. The more I work with the news show, Wellness TV, and Interlachen, the more I am going to learn these skills. Also the more classes I take that teach me to write and edit better, the more of a triple threat I’ll be.

With the Southern News Network, I’m gaining hands on experience of how to work in a studio in the different positions. I’ve learned directing probably isn’t the route I need to go because I hate not getting the perfect shot on my own and relying on someone else.

With Wellness TV I am learning more editing tricks that make my videos flow better. Michelle and Cynthia have a lot to offer and have helped me see how much I enjoy the work even though it takes hours. I think that’s why I want to be an editor, because its awesome to put some much time into something and see it help others.

With Interlachen I am learning how to run an organization, manage everything, and balance. I feel that Interlachen gives me the most real world experience out of all the broadcast productions in the department.

If I keep working with these three groups and keep taking diverse broadcast classes, I feel like I can work myself up to a great internship. I can’t give up no matter how much work it is or how busy I get because in the end it will be what makes me happiest.

Nov. 9, 2011

We have a theme for the yearbook!!! I am so happy I could dance! After some brainstorming some we are going to do a scrapbook theme. After the meeting I started in on Dion's training for photo-editing. Of course I've got all the photos caught up right now. He's going to be my photo-editor next year.  I think that since Austen is going to be a senior that it would be good if TJ got some training for next year as a video-editor.  I need to start looking at Lizzi and Mishka's stuff too. I've been doing a lot of business stuff for Interlachen.

For Wellness TV I am in charge of the dip/chewing tobacco package. I'm going to see if I can interview a nurse. Nadine's going to be working with me.  The thing is... b-roll. I never see people with spit bottles or anything.  I am going to have to creep a lot.

Nov. 1, 2011

I know I haven't posted in like two weeks so I'm not even going to count those hours.  I have had so much on my plate with Interlachen that I don't think I can commit to much else.  I have been doing three jobs and there never seems like enough time.  With the new check out system it makes it even more stressful.

Unfortunately I have yelled at the editor in chief a few times now and I have taken on her job because it's not getting done.  That has made no time for anything else.  I did catch up on the pictures today though, only took 3 hours.  I also had to email people back because, as it turns out, my editor didn't tell me she had scheduled them so I am now pleading with the departments to forgive us. I hate Interlachen having a bad reputation.

Things are going to change.  I am going to start training Dion so I don't have to worry about pictures as much.  Also I am going to start talking to the other editors and seeing if they will want the positions next year.  If not I want them to start training new people. I have big plans that I am going to start doing.

I caught up on all the photos and even trained another person this week without getting too stressed out. I had the theater pictures for the play last night and that took forever but I got great pictures. I ran out of room on my memory card.  I have really improved I think.

Cynthia and I shot a PSA for wellness TV and I just couldn't get the words out right so we're going to have use a lot of broll.  That and it was so windy that I had to move my hair out of my face. I'll reshoot it if I have to. I work better if I can read what I want to say then say it instead of just blurting something out.

Sept. 29, 2011

Last night was totally awesome.  Three new people went out to shoot the soccer games and I barely had to help them. Brie was a complete natural, she went right up to the people and asked where she was allowed to go and what other restrictions were there.  She didn't understand the camera at first but by the end of the game she had used a memory card and a half.  I think she's a print communications major which makes me have hope she'll stay with yearbook.  For the men's soccer game Hendrick and Matt came over.  Matt was a sports photographer for his high school and just breezed through everything once he figured out the settings compared to a Nikon.  Hendrick was a little confused and less confident but he'll learn. He seemed to enjoy it.  All in all I am very satisfied with how they handled everything, all three were very professional on their first shoots.  I haven't edited the photos yet but I have uploaded them.  I had to, between the games and portraits we used every memory card.  I am super excited!

SNN finally did our first show!!! (You know, you were there.) Things were a little confusing not being able to hear them in the headset but we got it figured out.  I'll write more stories this time so the show isn't so short.

Sept. 26, 2011

I have spent a lot of time today catching up on pictures but I am stepping back for the rest of the week from Interlachen because I am falling behind in classes.  I need to get those all caught up first.  I still ran the meeting and taught some more people the camera, I even posted the notes on facebook.  But I was able to study in the lab today while I was doing it.  Also yesterday for Bid Day I got pics of the girls running to their new sisters.  It was raining so Sami helped me out with an umbrella.

I sent Anna a story for SNN today.  I'm not sure how many stories she has but I'll volunteer to help out if she needs them.

Today I got to show Dion how to set up for portraits.  I was a little rusty but we figured it out mostly.  The hair light got us.  I never knew that we use three point lighting for portraits.  Photography has really helped me understand what we have been talking about in Intro to Broadcast.  Shelby and Raven came by but I had to leave before I could really help them.

The exciting part of today is that Cynthia wants me to edit something for WTV!! Fitness with Sarah is a simple package to learn on she said so that's what I'm going to do.  Our first episode is 19 minutes long, we've got to shorten our packages.  Learned a lot today about that though.

Last night I took pictures at RecFest and the Coffee House. I went with Austen and he shot video.  I also did my voice over and watched Michelle edit our package, her package, and the bloopers.  I also edited pictures taken by Olivia, Charlie, and Ariel.  They are all promising new members so I am very excited.  Olivia gets good angles, need to go out with her one more time shooting.  Charlie did great and I am super proud of his angles and events he got.  Ariel is the same too, you can see the art major in him come out in his pictures. Bob set up the Interlachen account so that I can start transferring pictures so I think Jess and I are going to spend a day in the office just doing busy work.  Can't wait to see Wellness TV!

Sept. 14, 2011

Yesterday it only took three takes to get my stand up right.  Well I had it right each time but I look best the last time.  Olivia helped me discover my nervous tick is biting my lip.  Olivia and I interviewed Jess and I interviewed Big Dave.  Unfortunately Big Dave's audio didn't come out clear so hopefully tomorrow I can shoot him again.  Today to make up for it Luti did a super fast interview with Cynthia and me.  Dakota is going to let me edit this package with Michelle because she's busy. I'm super excited.

I showed DIon the basics of editing photos.  There's something about him that makes me want to train him to be the photoeditor.  His pictures came out great and I'm proud.  Out of all the people I've trained, I think there is only one person that I think might need me to go with them one more time.  I caught up on the pictures.  I am happy with everything right now.

Sept. 13, 2011

Well Sunday, Olivia and I found out that there is some unwritten rule that if you are a couple on campus you leave for the day.  Trying to get broll for Wellness TV was hard!  He had to stage most of them.  The one scene we didn't have to stage is my favorite of a guy and girl practicing lacrosse together.  Just too cute! I had Olivia stand in front of the camera and I zoomed in on them.  Olivia is great with coming up with ideas and talking to people, she's very helpful.  Today we're going to shoot the student interviews and the stand up. I've never done a stand up before so I'm a little nervous and not sure where to approach it but practice makes perfect.

Last night after the Wellness TV meeting Cynthia showed us a basic final cut pro use and I had no idea photography was going to help me this much.  I understand everything so much better now with a year of photography under my belt. I don't think I have a package to work on for the next session but I'll tag along and help whoever needs it.

For the Interlachen meeting I took charge and laid out everything we needed.  I am good at getting people to sign up for photograpy but I need Austen to help me show that video is good too.  I finish training this week so that makes everything better and I can start helping with video.  I am very proud of all the people I have trained so far because they get it.  Its not as hard as last year trying to explain everything.  But editing pictures gets lonely, I do miss having the company of Patrick because every session he taught me a little something new.  I need to find someone to take my spot for next year so I can start training them.

Sept. 9, 2011

Last night at the Dave Barnes concert I got great pictures!  Not going to lie, I totally pulled out my old press pass and used it just in case we needed it.  I met up with Dakota, Michelle, and Danielle so that yearbook, the Southern, and we said the school's channel (wink, wink Dakota) so we could get exclusive footage.  We didn't get an interview as hoped but we did get to meet him and take lots of pictures.  Poor Dakota, her tape ran out of room.  I worked with Dakota for 2 hours and on my own for one. I got to help Danielle learn the camera.  If she didn't have so much going on with the newspaper I would totally recruit her for Interlachen, she has a wonderful eye for shots. A little shy at first but she could be a great photojournalist and I hope she will be one.

Sept. 7, 2011

Today we had a "moc" session at SNN so that the new people could see how we would run things.  The new teleprompters look so cool!  I can't wait to use them.  Lauren and Luti are going to be entertaining to watch.  All our stories were written so that we could read what exactly we need to write.

Also I asked for a challenge and I think I definitely got one today in the Interlachen lab.  I thought I had killed the Mac.  Thank God for Bivens!  I needed to upload pictures and I hit the wrong button and filled up the (wrong) drive.  You really need to be on your toes when things like that happen. So now I will forever be checking myself at least twice.  I was able to upload the pictures finally (all 300, thanks Dalton!) and edit them for the most part but now I have a lock on my account and can't really do anything.  But its all good, finally gave me a learned experience I needed.

I went to Anna's shoot for the AOPi but didn't really do anything so I'm not going to count the hours.  I just roped people into interviews.  Dion was there and helped Anna a lot.  We have a lot to gain from the freshmen this year and I can't wait!

I have to get an idea of what a managing editor does so that I can get year book going.  I have trained two people so far and I am so happy that I won't be the only person doing pictures.  I need to get things rolling so I can have a life outside of the lab.  All pictures are caught up now that I know how to batch.  Just got to get Bob to make a folder on the server for me since my access is denied.  Sami is cleared for pictures and now Charlie Liu, a new guy to yearbook, and I are going to take pictures at three events this week.

Wellness TV is going to be so great! Olivia and Dakota are going to be in the same group as me.  I really think that our first package is going to be awesome!  We've got to get an interview scheduled but other than that we are so ready!! This is gonna be a great year!  We're doing long distance relationships and hopefully we'll here back from a professor soon so we can go shoot.  Cynthia and Michelle are supposed to show us how to use Final Cut in a little workshop they're putting together.

Aug. 31, 2011

Today we had another SNN meeting and passed out stories. Our group seems to be getting bigger which is awesome.  I'm willing to do whatever Anna needs but when she passed around the sign up sheet I wrote cameras.  It seems a lot of people did.  Maybe this year we'll be able to have all those positions that we talked about in class. I already wrote my blurb on Tracey Ashley and sent it to Anna so she can go over it.

Interlachen was mostly business again.  Typing in emails, emailing people, adding them to Facebook. It makes me feel like a creep.  But I did get to download and edit someone else's pictures this time which was nice.  I feel I need a new challenge in there though. I can't wait to work with some of the new talent coming in.

I also know that Olivia and I are working on the College Issues package for Wellness TV with maybe Dakota.  I am really excited to work with Olivia, she is working hard with every different outlet she can get.  She's really impressing me and I hope that she stays with everything.

Aug. 29, 2011

We had our first meetings for Southern News Network and Wellness TV today.  I'm excited for SNN!  I love doing news and being in a studio. And I know WTV is a lot to do but I am going to try to juggle all these things at one time.  I really want to work with WTV and Cynthia already told me she'd help me through the process.  I really think this semester is going to be exciting with the new freshmen helping out, especially Olivia.  She's really interested in everything.

As for Interlachen... I know that photography is a small portion of broadcast but since we are print and online this year I feel like more people will help.  I'm going to need it. Not only am I the photo editor this year but also the managing editor.  I had no clue it was going to be this stressful.  I think of Interlachen as my "real world situation" where there be bosses I can eaily get along with and then there will be others.  I get to learn the business portion with Interlachen.  Don't tell Jess or Bob but I like SNN a lot more, it makes me much happier.

Final Spring 2011

This semester has been a great one for broadcast students mainly because the studio is finished.  I am very grateful for it to be how it is because I was able to learn the basics of all the equipment this semester that is in the studio.  Most of the upper classmen do not give us freshmen a chance but in the Southern News Network, Anna, Luti, and Colleen were eager to help us learn the basics.  They told us every week we were improving.  Writing the stories for the Southern News Network was probably the most difficult thing to do just because it was a new style of writing.  I didn’t have to make it fancy and eloquent, I needed to make it simple and straightforward like when somebody is talking to you.  I got better at it I could tell because I noticed Colleen didn’t have to reword my stories as much.  I learned how to run the teleprompter and wasn’t very good at the speed but I will get the hang of it with time.  The audio was a bit tricky at first especially since Luti is so much louder than Colleen.  But I didn’t do too horrible at that.  My favorite thing to do was to run the camera.  I love cameras so much!  It amazed me how some people made it so difficult but it is so easy.  I learned really quickly how to do a one shot and a two shot.  Anna complimented me a bunch during the show about the speed and smoothness I worked it at.  I can honestly say I am so grateful for this opportunity because it is really but my passions into perspective.

Interlachen is still my favorite thing to work on though.  Something about getting to help document history just sets my heart on fire.  I love cameras, still and video, and this semester I realized how important it is to capture a story in one picture.  It was like an epiphany one night when Patrick took me out on a shoot to teach me.  I am going to strive for that next year as the photo-editor.  I learned how to layout the yearbook and the many little tweaks that have to be done.  I know so much more than I did last semester.  I am much more aware of typing and layout issues.  I can’t even look at a book or magazine without thinking about it (same with movies and focus points and angles).  Many late nights in the Interlachen office and my goal for the year was achieved: to have this year’s yearbook finished on time.  I promise by the end of my career here at Florida Southern, Interlachen will have a good reputation again.  I am ready to do whatever gets thrown my way because I know now what to do for copy writing, laying out of the pages, editing the pictures just right, and going back through and doing it all again multiple times.  Patrick has taught me well and I will do that too with the new members of the team next year.

March 29, 2011

I love the news show!  It makes me happy to hear Colleen and Anna say they are proud of us.  I think that my skills are getting better.  Anna gave me a lot of compliments when I was running the camera.  I had the two shot and the one shot yesterday because we weren't sure if that was too much for Pam since that was her first time with the camera.  All three of my stories were used (reworded of course but basically the same) so I think that I am finally getting it right when I write the stories.

March 24, 2011

I have decided not to count the hours for the stories I write for the Southern News Network because Anna and Colleen spend so much time rewording them.  It feels unfair to count that as hours when they do the real work.  But on the show itself, only Luti was our anchor so Dave had an easy one shot.  I ran audio and that was simple since I didn't have to figure out who was wearing which mic.  To me it didn't seem like there were that many stories this week.  Anna said there were but it honestly didn't seem like it.  But with our tiny group we managed to get things done.

Interlachen.  Where to start.  Same stuff as it has been, just going over and doing final tweaks.  We are so close to being done for real this time. I know this because I actually have a social life this week.  Doesn't mean I'm not putting in a lot of hours.  If the printer didn't go so slow it would have cut an easy 2 hours off my time but I can't help that.

Bradford, I know this is a huge amount of hours to blog at once but you've seen me in the Interlachen office.  I have earned a whole semester's worth of hours finishing this yearbook.  Turns out I'm not so bad at layout and I got to layout a few spreads all on my own.  I also have become the world's greatest Facebook stalker but almost every person is named in the yearbook.  I have been in here most nights until 1 am when Safety kicks us out.  Patrick has made sure that I have learned everything I need to know and has put me in charge of it.  I can't imagine how hard this would be if he was gone.  I plan on having this all done early next year as the photo editor.  I don't like this cramming stuff. I never did sleep in the office but I should have. But through this all I have learned how to do a lot of things in Interlachen such as copy, layout, photo editing, and using my resources.

March 15, 2011

People are taking advantage of Anna and it really upsets me.  She is the one upperclassmen other than Luti that is teaching us freshmen how to use the equipment.  There were six of us there yesterday.  Sami and I ran cameras and there were way less problems this week without the guys doing it.  Anna wants us to run cameras everytime.  We were able to record it all in the first run through.  That was so exciting!  Colleen, Sami, and I looked up story ideas and posted them on facebook so that people can write this week since only two stories got sent in.  I love doing the show and I know that's what I want to do, the background work.  Someone else's pretty face can be in front of the camera, I want to put it all together and do the hard work.  I got to watch Anna edit for a little while but had to leave.

I spent way too much time in Interlachen yesterday.  I was there from 4:30 til 11:30 when Patrick kicked me out.  I have been taught how to edit the layout and fix the minor errors.  The little OCD I have has made such a huge difference too.  I catch little things and work on them until perfect.  It drives Patrick a little crazy but thats ok.  We are going to get this yearbook done by Friday if I have to sleep in the office.  I am not going to let Interlachen keep this bad reputation!

March 9, 2011

Back from Spring Break only to realize the yearbook is due next Friday.  Nine days and they will be the longest ever.  Yesterday I spent two and a half hours working on photos.  I had to learn some things from Patrick so about half an hour was that but I have done a lot of this work myself.  I know how to resize pictures, how to fix the shading, and how to zoom in on the things in the picture we really want.  Now its just going through all the pictures and doing that.  I also took that follow up survey.  I think its worth an hour but if it's not please correct me Bradford.  Today I ran the sound for the Southern News.  Luti was so loud!  He was much louder than Colleen but I figured out his mic and turned it down.  He got really excited with the sports and got loud again.  We were having some problems with camera stuff but that's OK.  TJ and I are going to attempt a package of Founder's Week.  We are going to be over seen by Anna so we should be fine but it will be my first time.  I am so excited for it!

Later on today I finished going through the yearbook.  All pictures are fixed that are marked except for one that I can't open for some reason... Oh well.  I thought it was going to be so much more work but I also need to go through and process more pictures.  I will come back tomorrow between classes and during free time to do that because a sane person should only spend a few hours in this tiny room and I have met my limit for the day.  But I hope that I won't be pulling long nights if I get this ahead now.  eight days and counting to finish.

Last night I totally forgot that I was supposed to meet up with Cynthia and process photos.  I felt so bad that I went in the lab and process them by myself for 2 hours.  I had notes from where Patrick and I went over how to on Wednesday.  The overexposing the pictures for them to print well is what keeps getting me confused.  Jess came in the last hour and talked about the trip to New Orleans with me.  I am so excited that I get to go to that and that I am going to gain that much more knowledge with Interlachen.  Today I did the survey for the girl that needed the thesis work right after Bob's class, right before Bradford's.  I am so curious on that now.

Yesterday Shelby and I ran the cameras for the News Network each for our first time.  We were both a little worried about that but the show came out great.  It was super easy, all I really had to do was wave at them so they knew it was back to my camera.  Everything is controlled by the dashboard in the studio so that was good.  We had problems with the headsets at first but Luti fixed that.  First Justin couldn't hear us, then we couldn't hear Justin.  It was really awesome although I didn't do much.  I felt important though.  The most I had to do was zoom in to get the white balance.  I really love working with this show because everyone is so friendly and trying to teach us how to work everything so that we are doing well.  Luti came right up to me and started showing me what to do and how to use the camera. Its a good change from where I was with Wellness TV.

Spring Midterm

So far this semester I have learned a couple of new things but it has mostly been perfecting what I already know how to use.  Patrick’s graduation date is getting closer and closer so he has been working with me more and more to learn what I need to know for Interlachen next year.  Although I really wanted to learn how to use the Interlachen’s video camera for the video yearbook, I have to learn all I can now from Patrick before he leaves.  I have learned how to process photographs and how to change them so that they are able to be used in the right format through Photoshop and Lightroom.  I learned also how to brighten the pictures because the ink makes the pictures darker when printed.

With the pictures I have been taking I had a kind of epiphany.  I have realized that there are good pictures but the pictures do not mean anything if they do not tell the story in that one shot.  I have to capture that moment that says what is going on with the people in it and around them.  I really practiced that with Patrick when he took me to the Jekyll and Hyde photo shoot and with each picture I tried to capture the emotion.  With that in mind, I have never shot better than that night; that and I had Patrick’s camera.  Going through the pictures that I have edited I realized those pictures that reflect the emotions being felt at that moment are the pictures that are going to make the yearbook.

The new talents I am learning are with the Southern News Network with Anna.  The first time I went in it was awesome to watch how the upperclassmen worked so well.  Colleen emailed us examples of how to write the stories and Anna is so impressed at how our stories are getting better.  I know how to run the teleprompter but I still cannot figure out how fast to go.  She is really trying to get us experience and that makes me more dedicated to the show.  I am passionate about this show and since Wellness TV is not getting me the experience I need I am going to put all that energy into this show.

This semester is only half way done so I am going to learn the video work.  I have to to survive in this industry because it is mostly video, not photojournalism.  I am going to learn it all probably from Anna and her show but I am going to talk to Austen so that I can still contribute to the Interlachen.  That’s where my heart is in this department and I want to be about making history.  This is something I am so passionate about and if all else fails I will teach myself.  I have watched Cynthia and others edit so I have an idea.  But it will happen by the end of this semester.

Feb. 17, 2011

Last night was the most fun I've had yet working with Interlachen!  Patrick took me to the media night for Jekyll and Hyde.   It was so amazing!!!  We used up a whole memory card on the play itself and then another two on the posed shots.  He told me it was going to be a long night but I didn't realize it would be 11:30pm before we left.  There is nothing more invigorating than taking that one picture that tells a story all on its own.  Patrick was very proud of me, he even let me use his camera and lens.  I didn't know ISO could be over 5000!  And the zoom!  I attached his wide lens to my camera and was able to get a lot of group shots.  I tried with flash once and I didn't like it.  Theater lighting is terrible.  But this had to be the best practice I've had learning how to tell a story with pictures which is part of the Broadcast world.

Anna didn't have enough stories for the show this week but she said that the quality of the stories are getting better.  She said that she knows the core group now and she is ready to make this thing go.  I got an hour from the story last week and an hour meeting today.  We had a great brainstorming time today.  I have never heard of my assignment but it's ok, I will do my research.  Gives me more to learn about.  I need to get used to that anyways because I won't have everything available to me on posters constantly.  This weekend I was supposed take pictures for Interlachen but the lighting was so poor that I couldn't so I didn't count the time since I got nothing accomplished.

With the lighting I told her what ISO to use.  After we get done with the all the pictures, Jess shows up and tells us that we took pictures of the wrong group.  So now we have a mystery group shot.  Also the group we were supposed to take pictures of never showed.  When all was said and done, Sami has a better understanding of how the camera works based on the lighting.

Yesterday I learned how to used the teleprompter with Maggie for the Southern News Network.  I had to leave the show after 30 minutes but while I was there I learned how fast the prompter needs to go.  The first time we went too slow and John Luti was funny.  But when we got it figrued out I had to leave to do an interview for Interlachen.  The religion department is really nice.  That was another 30 minutes that went by so fast.  Yesterday was a great learning day!  I had to cancel my pictures of a citrus class because I hurt my hand and can't hold a camera.

I finally understand the photojournalism aspect of broadcast!  For Interlachen I always just tried to get good pictures but tonight Patrick and I were taking pictures for the musical and I realized that with video you have time to develop the story but this one picture has to tell the story.  I have to capture it in this shot or no one will know about it.  So that is now my goal to work with telling a story.  I also realized that when I was editing pictures Tuesday.  As Patrick and I were going through them I realized that they had to tell specific stories in a smile.  It all makes sense now!  I also wrote an article for Anna but she hasn't sent the email with the revisions and advice like she said she would.  I want to wait to email her the article so that she isn't disappointed in it.  But no matter what it goes out tomorrow.

Today at Anna's meeting for the Southern News Network we went over what she expected from the show.  She wasn't very pleased with this week's work and from now on it will be 30 minutes for written work.  She is going have us learning different things each week which is awesome!! I am very excited for that.  Colleen is going email everyone revisions on the script so that we have a better understanding.  We are going to start doing packages and maybe adding in sports with another anchor.  I think that this is going to be great experience and now that we know what Anna wants we are going to make this work.  I am sure going to try to learn what is what so that I can make it work because this is something I am very passionate about.

I covered the block party yesterday and it was so much fun.  I got a lot of work done until the sun started going down.  Jess wanted me to fill the memory card and I tried.  The lighting was great for most of the time.  every now and then the shutter would slow down and the pictures would be blurry but then I would change the apature and it all worked out for me.  I wanted to get some work done for Consuelo but I have no clue how to use the equipment so Monday I will help her.

I was able to train somebody for Interlachen!  Her name was Juliana I think.  She's brand new and since I am taking Patrick's position next year, he monitored me and filled in the gaps for me.  It was a good experience for me especially since Juliana's first language isn't English.  I had to repeat myself (which helps me remember everything that Patrick was filling in).  She goes on her first shoot soon and I am going to shadow her to make sure she does everything right.  Also I wrote another story for Anna and emailed it to her.  I hope that since I sent it in so early she will email me back if there is a problem with this story.

Today was a great learning day in the studio for me.  Us underclassmen really didn't get to do anything, we got to watch how it was all done.  I thought it was really cool to watch Dakota on the camera, I want to learn how to do that.  Or run the teleprompter.  I was a little sad that in the first take, the story I wrote was in the script but after that it was out of it.  I can understand why because it was about an event that happened Friday night and it led into an event happening in February.  I am going to write another story and hope that I can figure out what was wrong because Anna didn't email me back.  But I really learned a lot about how the show runs today just by watching.

I am really glad that I did not have to video tape the Derek Hughes performance like I was suppose to because the lighting was so terrible.  Instead Cynthia told me to take pictures of the performance.  With the ISO at 1600 I still had barely enough light for anything.  And I am also glad I didn't have to video tape it because his last trick was a little risque.  That would definitely not have made it into the yearbook.  But I was really looking forward to learning the video camera and maybe next time when we don't have to worry about copyrights I will.  I also wrote an article on him for Anna's show and emailed it to her.  She never emailed me back so I hope that that's a good sign.  I can't wait to see how we are going to shoot this show!

Jan. 19, 2011

I am so excited for the new semester!  Yesterday was the last day for portraits (finally!) and since we were short on people I set up the portraits mostly by myself until Jess and Haylie got there.  I was able to remember just about everything from last semester.  I am pretty confident that I can do anything with the camera when it comes to taking pictures so I want to focus more on my writing and video skill this semester.  Anna's meeting today made me so excited for this news show that's going on.  I think that we will have so much fun.  She said each story is equal to one hour credit for this class and that's going to motivate a lot of people. I am just excited to get to go to the studio and work.  I want to know everything there is!

Jan. 13 2011

Hey Bradford!  I'm starting early with the hours!  Yesterday I helped out with the portraits for yearbook.  I couldn't help setting up because I had class but for the last 2 hours that the pictures were being done I was able to help.  I thought it was funny how Haley, Cynthina, and Austen were like "Now that you're here we'll get people!"  When I helped Cynthina with a picture I found out that the exposure was set wrong and some people's pictures came out really bad and exposed.  I hope we can figure out how to fix it.  I set the camera settings to where they needed to be.  I helped break things down and I was a little rusty but it came back to me after a little bit on how to do everything.  It was a successful 2 hours, we got 20 pics.
